This book is the first book in a long time that has managed to completely enthrall me, and immediately inspire me to take action as an educator, as a mother, and as a community member.<\/p>\n<p>The infographic below captures some of my initial thoughts and ideas as I&#8217;ve made my way through chapters 1 &#8211; 5.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-521 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/melissathompson.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/The-Anxious-Generation-Ch-1-5-2-300x232.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"672\" height=\"519\" srcset=\"https:\/\/melissathompson.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/The-Anxious-Generation-Ch-1-5-2-300x232.png 300w, https:\/\/melissathompson.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/The-Anxious-Generation-Ch-1-5-2-1024x791.png 1024w, https:\/\/melissathompson.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/The-Anxious-Generation-Ch-1-5-2-768x593.png 768w, https:\/\/melissathompson.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/The-Anxious-Generation-Ch-1-5-2-1536x1187.png 1536w, https:\/\/melissathompson.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/The-Anxious-Generation-Ch-1-5-2.png 2000w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 672px) 100vw, 672px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>In a BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) school, what challenges are we seeing?<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Family-owned devices limits the programs we can use for monitoring<\/li>\n<li>Kids chatting during class<\/li>\n<li>Playing games<\/li>\n<li>Switching screens as soon as the teacher walks by<\/li>\n<li>Inconsistent supervision across teachers<\/li>\n<li>Cell phones to talk to parents (is that ok?)<\/li>\n<li>Some teachers allow for certain things, others don&#8217;t (text your parent for this or that&#8230;)<\/li>\n<li>Cell phones needed (?) when they go off campus for lunch<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Other points made in the book that I see in school:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Over-supervision at recess<\/li>\n<li>Reduced Focus\/Attention span across many grades<\/li>\n<li>Too much (?) interference for conflict resolution<\/li>\n<li>Mixed aged play but we tend to limit for behaviour and conflict purposes<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Thoughts as a parent\/individual:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>What do we model?<\/li>\n<li>Finding the right parent group to join together<\/li>\n<li>Prolonged phone use in bed or on couch<\/li>\n<li>Divided attention<\/li>\n<li>Heartbroken at the thought that my son could think I value the phone more than him<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Action Ideas:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Parent Book Club\n<ul>\n<li>Create a Book Club discussion guide for other schools\/parents<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Parent Book Club within community<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/letgrow.org\/program\/anxious-generation\/\">Let Grow Experience<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Host a conference<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I have been reading The Anxious Generation by Jonathan Haidt.
